The Netherlands is and remains the best protected delta and liveable in the world, even after 2100, by taking timely future-proof and integrated measures against manageable costs.

The Netherlands is currently the best protected delta in the world with the strictest standards worldwide. Uncertainty about the speed of the sea level rise (see climate scenarios), fluctuations in river discharges from very low to extremely high and an increase in extreme weather make it necessary to think 46 about solutions, within and above all off the beaten track. Dyke and coastal reinforcement and river widening, as we are currently implementing and planning, may not be sufficient in the long term. In addition, we also want to contribute to climate mitigation and the circular economy (sustainability) from water management. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential to continue coping with climate change in the long term. The development of new solutions requires the efforts of many parties: Government (central government, water boards, provinces and municipalities), companies, knowledge institutions and social organizations. IenW challenges the top sectors to come up with future-proof solutions. New concepts can be applied by companies and institutions worldwide. The Netherlands can continue to play a prominent and leading international role in the field of water. This mission has the following sub themes:

• Sustainability and cost control of water management implementation projects. “How can we make water measures sustainable and keep costs manageable and thus strengthen the competitive position of the Netherlands?”
• Adapt to accelerated sea level rise and increasing weather extremes. “How can existing measures grow and which alternative transformative measures are conceivable and feasible, and what are the spatial and social aspects?”
• The Netherlands digital water land. “Data in water management and cyber security”
• Energy from water. “In 2030, energy from water will be an integral part of energy and climate policy”
